Dear Families of Fifth Graders,
****PLEASE READ THIS NOTE FROM BMS****

We will have experts on hand to share valuable information and parenting tips with you. Child care and dinner will be provided. Dinner will be served at 6:30, and the presentation will begin at 7:00. Please RSVP to Shelly Geasler at sgeasler@CatoctinRidge.com if you plan to attend.
2. BMS is re-scheduling the 5th grade parent information night for all parents who were not able to attend on February 23rd. Parents of current 5th graders are invited to attend an evening program on March 23rd from 7:00-8:00 in the BMS cafeteria. We will have staff available to discuss our mission and vision, our academic program, and the registration process. Again, if you were unable to attend on February 23rd, please plan on joining us for this important event.

The 5th graders have made it through two days of reading MSA testing! We do not have testing on Thursday but it resumes on Friday and Monday with math testing. Please make sure your child is getting a good night sleep and that he/she eats breakfast before the test. Next Tuesday we will be back in our regular routine and schedule.
Please sign the permission slip (it went home last week) and send in $9 cash for our Maryland Science Center Field Trip by this Friday March 12. The trip is scheduled for Fri. March 19. Thank you!
Please collect and send in General Mills Box Tops. We used this money to defer the cost of our field trip. The next round will go towards our 5th grade picnic. It really adds up quickly!
Have a great month!

Dear Families of 5th Graders,
We are pleased to have your child join our 5th grade class and look forward to working with you and your child in the coming year. Teaching is, of course, a cooperative effort of parents, teachers, children and community, and we know that you are eager to be involved. Below you will find some information that you may find helpful.
Homework- Assignments will be given almost EVERY NIGHT. Homework should usually take no more than 45 minutes and often may take much less. It should be turned in on a daily basis, neatly completed in an organized format, in a spiral notebook or on loose-leaf paper, unless otherwise directed. Homework grades within subjects will be based on timely completion and effort. The student should complete homework independently, but parental involvement (checking for accuracy, neatness and completion) is very helpful. Parents are expected to initial or sign the agenda (planner) each evening. BES homework planners are required and are being provided for $5 each. Please send the money in as soon as possible.
In order to ensure success in 5th grade for your child, we recommend that you set aside some time each day to discuss school work with you child, review assignments and class work, and READ together. Reading to your child and with your child is a wonderful experience! Statistics show the more a child reads, the better he/she will do in school. Each night your child must list in his/her agenda the title and the page numbers read of the reading material. Please initial this. We also would like to encourage every one of our math students to become proficient with their multiplication facts. At the 5th grade level we will be learning more multi-step math concepts and if a student is
struggling with his/her facts it makes it very difficult for them to be able to concentrate on the new skills. Just have your child talk to his/her teacher for suggestions.
Weekly Communication – School communicationswill be sent home on a regular basis in a “Wednesday Folder”. Please sign and return the folder the next day. Please feel free to call us in the classroom with any problems or concerns. We will not be able to get back to you until the end of the day. You may also send in notes or write in the agenda. We can be reached at the following numbers and email addresses:
Mary Chew 240-236-2927 mary.chew@fcps.org
Jainee Lewis 240-236-2926 jainee.lewis@fcps.org
Shane Price 240-236-2928 shane.price@fcps.org
Supplies – Please try to get the necessary items as soon as possible if you have not already done so. If getting the supplies is a problem at this time, we have them available here at BES, just have your child ask or send in a note. Please label all personal supplies with your child’s name.
Volunteers – Our PTO volunteer coordinator will be sending home a letter explaining the program.
Attendance – It is very important that your child come to school regularly and on time. This will ensure that he or she will not miss important lessons and activities. If your child misses a day it is their responsibility to check the “We Missed You Folder” on their desk when he/she returns.
Thank you in advance for you cooperation. We appreciate your support for your child and the class!
Sincerely, The Fifth Grade Team
